Facelift

You may be candidate for facelift (rhytidectomy) if you have experienced a loss of skin elasticity and muscle tone of the face and neck. A facelift may also be desirable if you have the appearance of jowls and deep creases between the base of the nose and the corners of the mouth, developed facial and neck wrinkles. A facelift may also be helpful if you believe you lack youthful chin and neck contours and/or feel you have a tired facial appearance.

A facelift is intended to give the patient a more rested and youthful contour to the face and neck. Facelifts range in size from "mini" to "standard" depending on location and extent of skin laxity. The operation is done on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with sedation, or under general anesthesia. The patient goes home with head and neck wrapped in dressings, which are usually removed the next day. Minimal initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Sutures are removed within 14 days. Bruising and swelling decrease to "socially acceptable" levels in 10-20 days. The final result of a facelift procedure is evident in 4-6 weeks or sooner, with continued improvement for several months.

A facelift is considered cosmetic and therefore is not covered by insurance. The patient is responsible for payment. The specific risks and the suitability of facelift (rhytidectomy) procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are unusual.

Eyelid Lift (Blepharoplasty)

You may be a candidate for eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) if you have excessive, sagging, or wrinkled upper or lower eyelid skin. Eyelid lift can also be helpful if you have excess upper eyelid skin that interferes with vision or if you have lost your natural upper eyelid crease. Eyelid lift may also be indicated if you have puffy pouches of fat in the upper or lower lids that create a tired or aged appearance.

The eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) procedure is intended to produce a more youthful and rested appearance of the eyes. The procedure may also widen your visual fields if excessive upper lid skin has partially blocked vision. Blepharoplasty is done on an outpatient basis under sedation and local or general anesthesia. Initial mild discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Bruising and sensitivity to light last at least a week or two. Swelling progressively disappears in 1-2 weeks. Eye makeup can be used after sutures are removed.

If eyelid lift surgery is being done to improve the field of vision, insurance may cover upper lid surgery. Otherwise, blepharoplasty procedures are considered cosmetic, and the patient is responsible for payment. The specific risks and the suitability of eyelid lift for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are rare.

Brow Lift

You may be a candidate for a brow lift (forehead lift) if you have a sagging forehead or brows that hang too low and too close to the eyes. You may also desire a forehead or brow lift if you have deep vertical furrows between the eyebrows (frown lines). A brow lift (forehead lift) is intended to give a more youthful and rested appearance to the forehead and upper eyelids.

Browlift is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia or monitored sedation. Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Most swelling and bruising is gone in 7-10 days.

Browlift is considered cosmetic and therefore is not covered by insurance. The patient is responsible for payment. The specific risks and the suitability of the forehead lift procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are unusual.

Liposuction

You may be a candidate for liposuction if you have excess subcutaneous fat, which is resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction may also be desirable if you wish to change the contours of your body. Commonly involved areas are the anterior part of the neck (under the chin), upper arms and armpits, male chest/breasts, trunk, abdomen, waist, hips, thighs, inner knees, calves, and ankles. Most patients are near normal weight and desire permanent contour changes. Improved techniques now allow larger amounts of fat removal. Liposculpture can be useful to heavier persons as well.

Liposuction is intended to produce a permanent improvement in the contour and proportion of the treated areas. A more flattering figure or physique, in or out of clothing, is another goal of liposculpture. Liposuction is done on an outpatient basis. General anesthesia is usually used for safety and comfort. The patient goes home with a compression garment (or tape) covering the treated areas. Compression is advised for about a month as it helps reduce swelling after liposuction. Once pain and soreness decrease, it is frequently more comfortable to wear lycra or spandex exercise pants. Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Bruising and swelling usually subside in 2-4 weeks. The final result takes shape over 2-3 months.

Liposuction is considered cosmetic and therefore is not covered by insurance. The patient is responsible for payment The specific risks and the suitability of liposuction for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are rare.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

If you have loose or sagging abdominal wall skin frequently associated with abnormal relaxation of the anterior abdominal wall muscles (frequently secondary to multiple pregnancies or prior surgery), you may be a candidate for abdominoplasty. You may also be a candidate if you are unable to tighten abdominal wall skin with exercise. The procedures is intended to give the patient a smoother, flatter abdomen.

The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia in our office with a one night hospital stay. (Mini and modified abdominoplasties are similarly performed as outpatient procedures.) Mini-abdominoplasty tightens the lower abdominal wall skin only (shortest scar). Modified abdominoplasty addresses conditions where just the muscle wall or just the abdominal skin requires repair. Standard abdominoplasty tightens all of the abdominal wall skin and muscles (standard scar). Abdominoplasty can be one of the more uncomfortable plastic surgery procedures and probably requires more time consuming and limiting recovery. You will be encouraged to be moving and walking within 1-2 days. Light activity is comfortable in 10-20 days. Sports will not be comfortable for about 6 weeks.

A tummy tuck is considered cosmetic and therefore is not covered by insurance. The patient is responsible for payment. The specific risks and the suitability of abdominoplasty for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are unusual.

Breast Enlargment

Women who desire larger breasts may wish to have a breast enlargement (augmentation) procedure. Breast augmentation may also be indicated for women who have one breast that is noticeably smaller than the other. Breast augmentation is intended to give the patient larger and more shapely breasts. A more positive self image may also be a result of breast enlargement.

Breast enlargement is done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. A small incision is made under the breast and a saline implant is inserted under the breast tissue or under the breast tissue and the underlying muscle. The patient goes home in an elastic bra. The bra helps hold the breasts in the correct position. Initial discomfort is controlled with oral medication. Light activities can be resumed as tolerated and aerobic activities can be started in about 3 weeks.

Breast enlargement is considered cosmetic and therefore is not covered by insurance. The patient is responsible for payment. The specific risks and the suitability of breast augmentation for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are unusual.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

You may be a candidate for this procedure if you have sagging breasts due to past pregnancies, genetics, or aging. You may also desire a mastopexy if breast sagging is too great to be treated with an implant alone. The procedure may also be helpful if your nipple-areolar complexes (pigmented areas around nipples) are enlarged. The procedure is intended to give the patient an elevated, more youthful breast contour, as well as nipple-areolar complexes of the desired size and at the correct height.

The procedure is done on an outpatient basis under sedation and local or general anesthesia. The patient goes home with only light dressings over the incision lines. Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Light activities may be started in 7-10 days.

Breast lift is considered cosmetic and therefore is not covered by insurance. The patient is responsible for payment. The specific risks and the suitability of mastopexy for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are rare.

Ear Pinning (Otoplasty)

You may be a candidate for ear pinning (otoplasty) if you have ears that stick out too far from the side of the head. You may also want to have an otoplasty procedure if your ears have an unusual or undesirable shape. The goal is to create ears that have normal folds and shape with a normal level protrusion from the side of the head.

Otoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis under sedation and local or general anesthesia. The ears are usually bandaged with a head band type dressing for several days after surgery. Initial mild postoperative discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. The procedure is appropriate beginning at age 5 or 6 or at any time thereafter. The ears usually look "normal" within 10-20 days. Usually, a head band is worn for 2-3 weeks to protect the ears. Contact sports should be avoided for about a month.

Ear pinning is considered to be cosmetic and so is usually not covered by insurance. The specific risks and the suitability of otoplasty for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are unusual.
