Botox

Botox^® is the trade name of Botulinum Toxin Type A, a purified toxin produced by the bacterium Clostrdium botulinum. Botox is injected directly into the skin in extremely small doses. Specific muscles that cause frown lines are targeted by the injections. These isolated muscles are paralysed by the Botox, and can no longer contract. The action of frowning is stopped, and frown lines diminish.

Frown lines are caused by the bunching of skin from facial muscle contractions. When we frown, the skin between our eyebrows is gathered into a fold which eventually causes a chronic furrow. This gives our face a frustrated, discouraged, angry look which is distracting to others and a bother to ourselves. Now you can soften and reduce these frown lines without surgery and without scars, by a simple Botox treatment.

The results of Botox treatment start to appear in three to ten days. The treated muscles will gradually regain their action over three to five months. When the frown line starts to reappear, a simple repeat treatment is all that is necessary to maintain the desired results.

 

Introduction to Chemical Peels

What is the Jessner's Peel?

The Jessner's peeling solution is a superficial peel comprised of three different peeling agents in an ethanol base. Each agent acts in a slightly different manner, making the solution highly effective and predictable. This peeling agent provides significant visible exfoliation with minimal complications and is simple to use.

A Jessner's peel smooths and rejuvenates the sun-damaged skin. It is indicated for patients with mild to severe acne, melasma, moderate wrinkling, and actinic damage. Multiple areas can be treated at the same time. Peeling the face, neck, hands, and upper chest is quite effective. This peeling agent is excellent for all skin types. Ethnic and darker skin types should use Theraderm Enlighten in conjunction with receiving Jessner's peels to prevent hyperpigmentation.

Adding successive layers to the skin controls the depth or level of the peel. During a peel, an even layer of the solution is applied and allowed to dry without neutralizing. The Jessner's peel is self-limiting and is left on the skin. After the initial layer is dry a second layer can be applied to achieve deeper penetration. White frosting occurs an serves to monitor the endpoint for layers added. Even frosting signifies a uniform, even peel.

Unique Benefits of the Lactic Acid Peel

The 70% Lactic Acid is a safe peeling solution that can be used as a superficial or medium depth peeling agent. Lactic acid is present in all human cells, which means that it is safer then other alpha hydroxy acids. The lactic acid peel is easier to control during application. The versatility is in altering the concentration and time of application to control the depth of the peel. Patients experience a quick recovery with this peel procedure, giving them the freedom of no down time from raw or blistered skin.

The 70% Lactic Acid peel is used for skin rejuvenation. Patients with acne, pigmentary changes, moderate wrinkling, or actinic damage can achieve noticeable results in the look and feel of their skin. The peel acts by loosening the cohesive glue-like adhesion (glucosaminoglycans/GAGS) in the outer five or six layers of the epidermis. As these outer layers begin to loosen and exfoliate with daily skin care, new epidermal cells are produced. The "fresh" cells are healthier and more youthful. New collagen and elastic fibers are produced in the dermal layer of the skin. Over a period of time the skin surface begins to look younger and smoother. The restoration of the elasticity actually causes the disappearance of fine lines!

 

Microdermabrasion

Particle skin resurfacing, also know as Microdermabrasion, removes the outer layer of skin through the use of a highly controlled spray of aluminum oxide crystals. When repeated once a week over a five-week period, clients will notice at least a 50% improvement in the texture, color, and appearance of their skin. Common treatment conditions include:

Unlike chemical peels where it is all or nothing in one treatment plan, particle skin resurfacing is a multiple step process that is both gradual and less invasive than older methods of exfoliation. Anesthesia is not necessary, and because there is minimal irritation after the procedure, client do not need to worry about recuperation time. The results are truly amazing. Unlike many other skin resurfacing techniques, particle skin resurfacing does not discriminate. It is ideal for heavily pigmented skin types including that of Hispanics, African Americans, and Asians. Because there is no acid or thermal effect, hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation are non issues with particle skin resurfacing. Laser Hair Removal

The past few years have been busy in the field of laser surgery. There are many new and exciting uses for laser energy. Laser light can be used to help remove tattoos, soften fine lines and wrinkles, correct vision, and now permanently remove most hair!

Imagine how nice it would be to never again shave, wax, or pluck; no more messy creams or post razor burn! Both men and women are interested in laser hair removal. Hair can be removed from any area. The most commonly treated sites are: lips, chins, sideburns, and beard areas. Bikini lines, underarms, and back hair are popular contenders for the laser. Entire arms or legs can be essentially hair free. Those patients who have had hair transplants and may no longer wish the same hair placement due to a changing hairline can have hairs removed. Unwanted hair on fingers, toes, and eyebrows can be eliminated.

Lasers work by emitting a wavelength of light specific for its target. The laser used to treat fine lines and wrinkles is commonly a carbon dioxide laser. This laser targets water in the skin cells and causes the collagen fibers to shrink. This results in healed skin which is smooth.

A hair removal laser must target the pigment in the hair follicles so that the laser beam concentrates there and causes the follicles to fall out. The best candidates for laser hair removal have dark hair.

Because hair grows in three phases, only the actively growing hairs can be pulsed by a laser beam. The resting stage hairs will need to mature into growing hairs with pigment in them before they can be eliminated.

This means that more than one treatment will be necessary. An average number of total treatments for one site will be five to six for complete hair removal. However, each site and skin type is a bit different; therefore, treatments are individualized. The upper lip and chin usually require four sessions. Bikini lines may take five sessions.

Dr. Carl uses a long pulse Alexandrite laser that has a built-in dynamic cooling device. This feature allows for skin cooling and added patient comfort. The Candela GentleLASE Plus is a fast, effective, and affordable solutions for the removal of unwanted hair. Patients are often concerned about the discomfort of laser treatments. Dr. Carl herself has had hair removal performed and agrees that mild stinging occurs and is gone in seconds. This laser also does a nice job of treating larger, blue leg veins that frequently accompany spider veins. Sclerotherapy and laser light combined can enhance the appearance of legs by erasing those unsightly veins. 60% to 70% improvement can frequently be seen after just one treatment.

The best time of the year to consider having these treatments is when you are not actively tanning. Patients need to avoid the sun for 6 weeks before laser therapy so that the laser light sees only the dark hair follicles and does not compete for the tanned skin. It's much more effective this way.
